5 out of 5 stars Heavy Rain   September 6, 2010

Okay, it is guaranteed that this game is a completely unique experience so any kind of comparison is out of the question. I agree with many other reviews that this is not a game for everyone, if you are looking for an action packed, explosive megafest of blood, gore and violence look elsewhere.

Indeed, I think this is best described as a movie game in which the player is the director. You choose what to say, how to act and what choices to make - all of which effect the outcome of the story. Please don't think this is slow paced as there are many times when you need to think fast and move quickly. On a technical level the gameplay is extremely simple (everything you need to know is surmised on one page in the instruction manual!), players simply have to follow onscreen prompts. Overall this style of gameplay works well, I was never frustrated by its responsiveness which is great. Having said that the movement was at times a little too slow and clunky, I get a enjoyment out of exploring environments, something I was put off by because walking around was more like driving a truck that was too big to get round corners.

The graphics are good, again I agree with previous reviews that at times they seemed a little passe, certainly not the best by PS3 standards but nonetheless good and, considering the style of game, more the adequate.

Thank God it had a great story as this experience is entirely dependent on there being a great storyline. Had the makers got this wrong the whole thing would have fallen into the doldrums. Plot, characterization and development are all good drawing you back into the adventure and keeping you stuck in. To like Heavy Rain you have got to be patient, in many ways its a bit like reading a book, so not for people looking for instant gratification.

So how do I rate Heavy Rain? Well,I loved playing it, I'm a fan of everything that has a great story to tell. The freedom to essentially decide the the story yourself is fantastic and intriguing and it is this aspect that gives it its replay value. I would be excited by the prospect of another installment. Though I would make it more scary, gritty and dark. So if you are looking for something with a mature edge, something completely different which is fun and enjoyable its definitely worth a look!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of a Game   August 27, 2010

I loved this game to bits, it makes you feel so emphatic towards each of the four characters you play and I found it to be an emotional experience throughout. It's a nice change to have a video game which actually has an amazing storyline with it, it's very rare these days.

As for the gameplay aspects of it, given the style game is I don't think it could have been any better personally. If the controls were overhauled the game would need to be overhauled, and some amazing things about the game would need to be sacrificed.

This is a very brief review because I don't want to give anything away from the storyline, but I will say that this game just simply magnificent, you will want to play over and over and you won't forget the experience afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Nice game   August 11, 2010

It's a really nice game due to all the posibilities you have for chosing what you want to do. The story is emotive and exciting and it gets you impacient to know what's happening.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy Rain - Brilliant game, few flaws   August 10, 2010
D. R. Williams (UK)
Heavy Rain is moving, gripping, fun, and innovative. The story draws you in, and will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire duration. The characters are interesting to a degree, Madison, the female journalist seems like a bit of a pointless addition if you ask me, but she provides the sex factor of the game I guess.

The gameplay is fun and depending on your actions can supposedly affect the story outcome, but to be honest most of them don't make any difference at all. There are a few story elements that never really come to anything, which is a let down. There are points in the game that make you wonder what there significance are upon finishing it, which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars. And once you know the outcome there's no desire to replay the game, well, that's not entirely true: once I finished it, a while after I did have the desire to play through it again but as soon as I started to I instantly stopped caring, and even when you try to manipulate the story by doing things differently the majority of the following events are relatively familiar. Oh, and there's a LOT of screen tearing...

Pros
-Great game!

Cons
-No replay value (for me anyway)
-Plot holes
-Screen tearing

4 out of 5 stars you either love it or you hate it   August 9, 2010

One of my fellow reviewers has hit the nail on the head with his description, it is a "marmite game", you either love it or you hate it. Personally, I love it although I recognise that it won't be to everyone's taste!

I was fortunate enough to stumble across this game's spiritual predecessor, a great game called Farenheit. The stories are in no way linked but the "interactive film" approach used in Heavy Rain was first tried in Farenheit and later nearly perfected for the second game. I say nearly because it's not perfect but more on that in a minute. The playing style won't be to everyone's taste as some may find it too slow and mundane.

The game follows the same basic outline as Farenheit in that there are multiple playable characters all working to find the Origami killer but all with different motives. This can sometimes cause the characters to conflict which adds a nice touch considering each one's goal is the same. For ease of reading, I'll split the remainder of this review into pros and cons:

Pros

1. The story is brilliant, it is a lot darker than your usual game, dealing with very adult themes like loss, betrayal, mental instability and desperation.

2. The individual characters are by no means carbon copies of eachother, each one has a different personality and skill set which really affects what they do and how they do it.

3. You control literally every movement of the character, ranging from brushing your teeth to escaping a submerged car or fighting off a lunatic with an electric saw. This realism is fantastic, getting you really involved in the game.

4. The graphics are really stunning, easily the most "real" character rendering I've seen in a game.

5. The story is not set to one path, many of what seem to be minor decisions during the point in the game can have major effects on the plot, sometimes even resulting in the death of a mahjor character.

6. If one of the characters does die, it's not game over and you can't go back to undo a missed prompt, the story continues and the plot changes accordingly.

7. The intuitive controls really connect you with the character, you feel the excitement when you have to pound a button as quickly as possible to fight off a maniac or the tension when you have to carefully press buttons with the right speed and force to avoid electrified wires

Cons

1. The controls can sometimes be a bit fiddly, mainly when you have to line up a character quite precisely in order to flip a switch. Each character's turning circle is very big so just trying to reposition can be a bit frustrating.

2. Choosing dialogue is not as easy as it could be. You usually have four options corresponding with the face buttons but these options circle your head. While visually this is good as it makes it look like thoughts rather than just options. However as they circle, the text can be hard to see so if you have to make a quick decision, this can be a hinderance.

3. The quicktime events can sometimes be a little too difficult, requiring very quick reflexes in order not to miss them. That being said, the harder sections are usually when you're fighting for your life so this adds to the tension.

Overall, a fantastic game if you like the more real kind of experience. If you just want outright action with lots of guns, this won't be the game for you. For those of you who like the deeper game that explores much more adult themes, give this a go. I would also heavily recommend Farenheit especially because you can probably get it very cheap these days!
